ETUDE CARNEROS “GRACE BENOIST”’14 This well-made wine lies on the crisper, lighter-bodied style of the equation, softly textured and lengthy in that brightness of acidity. FRITZ RUSSIAN RIVER’08 – “This light yellow colored Chard opens with a mild pear bouquet with a hint of honey and wax beans. On the palate, this wine is full bodied and has slightly elevated acidity. The flavor profile is a spicy green pear with notes of unripe pineapple and nicely integrated oak. The finish is dry and it lingers nicely.”39.99

FROG’S LEAP NAPA’15 –  On several recent visits to Frog’s Leap, John Williams has detoured me from queries about Cabernet and Zinfandel to taste his Chardonnay. He and his team have been developing a new strategy: pick at the underside of ripeness; whole-cluster press; settle for two days, then rack into new oak barrels; allow the fermentation to begin on its own and reach its peak (four or five days); then, with half the sugar remaining in the grapes, rack the wine to lined cement tanks to finish whatever it’s going to do, undisturbed for another nine months. Up until now, I’ve been more curious about his quixotic focus on Chardonnay from Napa Valley, of all places, than about the wine itself. This vintage comes from Truchard and a nearby vineyard on Stanly Road, picking up on the best aspects of Carneros fruit—desert citrus cooled by the fog. It’s tart with baked lemon and grapefruit flavors, zesty in the middle and then richer in the end. The finish tastes like salted caramels, but it’s completely savory…and brisk. Williams’s goal is to make a great Chardonnay that’s expressive of its origins in Napa Valley and his 2015 may give you a new perspective on that possibility.”…….44.99

GIRARD RUSSIAN RIVER’12 – “This rich white is built around fig, pear and honeysuckle notes. Fades midpalate, but regains some depth and persistence on the finish.”……36.99

Partial barrel-fermentation and sur-lie ageing provide a creamy texture, while the balance of fruit produced in stainless steel helps to provide focus and vibrancy. The final result is a wine that will please both those that appreciate richer Chardonnays and those that look for pure fruit expression.”…….29.99

HAHN SANTA LUCIA “SLH ESTATE”’09 – “Fruity, citrusy and slightly candied, this youngster may lack for a spot of depth, but it hits the mark smartly as a forthright, crisply constructed effort whose slight angularity is the work of its high yet decently balanced acidity.”….26.99

PALI WINE CO. STA. FROG’S LEAP NAPA’16 –  Richer and more unctuous than most recent releases of sauvignon from Frog’s Leap, this wine still holds its freshness over the course of several days. KEENAN NAPA “RESERVE”’12– “ The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve from the estate in Spring Mountain Vineyards is the thirty-sixth vintage for the Robert Keenan Winery. This wine has 7% Cabernet Franc added into the blend and 700 cases were produced. A blockbuster wine for sure, with an inky/purple color, sweet crème de cassis, graphite, chocolate a hint of charcoal and burning embers – almost as if it wanted to behave like a Graves from Bordeaux. This is full-bodied, very rich, powerful and still moderately tannic. It’s a baby for sure, but what an impressive one.”……125.99

LEWIS CELLARS NAPA “MASON’S”’15 – “Both spicier and more powerful than in the past, the new “Mason’s” Cab reflects the concentration of the tiny 2015 crop. The nose is a piquant, focused, heady perfume of black cherry, Italian Maraschino cherry, cherry pit, black currant, mocha, black licorice, cola, clove, star anise and laurel scents. It proves as juicy as expected on the palate, where substantial tannic grip sits beneath the mulberry, black fig, black currant, dark cherry, licorice root, clove, bitter chocolate and graphite flavors. The finish is as heavy in body as the mid-palate, if a bit more savory at this point.”…………90.99

LYNDENHURST NAPA’14  “A rich and dense red with a powerful palate of ripe fruit and chewy tannins. Lots of blackberry and blueberry character. Expanding tannins.”………118.99

Plums, mocha, spices, licorice all flesh out in an inviting wine to drink now and over the next few years. The 2011 has no hard edges or greenness, but the medium-bodied structure suggests it is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. The blend is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot and 8% Cabernet Franc.”…….83.99

PRISONER CALIFORNIA  “CUTTINGS”’15  – After years of amazing and envious success with their red blend, Prisoner has finally released two new wines: a red and a white! Keeping in line with their roots, they have sourced from prominent, high quality vineyards throughout California, and they are fantastic.  The Prisoner Wine Co. 2015 Cuttings Red combines the richness, complexity and depth of Cabernet with the structure and intensity of Petite Sirah and Syrah, all the while channeling the robust character of Zinfandel. Both the name and label were inspired by the age-old method of using cuttings from a vineyard to propagate new vines. This wine is powerful and structured, with intense aromas of ripe dark fruit, black cherry and subtle spicy notes of cedar and anise. The palate is rich and dense, with flavors of sweet plum and red berries and complimented with a hint of dark cocoa powder. Polished tannins and integrated French oak adorn a long silky finish.”……83.99

RAYMOND NAPA “GENERATIONS”14  – “The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Generations tends to be a mix of four vineyards, two in St. Helena, one in Oakville and one in east Napa. It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and was bottled unfined and unfiltered, after spending 19 months in 60% new French oak. Production is a modest 1,600+ cases. A brilliant wine from Boisset, it exhibits notes of blackberry and cassis, truffle, chocolate and spice bow. ROBERTS & ROBERTS NAPA “ST. HELENA” CABERNET14  – “The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Louer Family hails from St. Helena. SALVESTRIN NAPA “ST. HELENA”’14  – “The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate comes from the estate vineyards and is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. This showed well. It’s a 2013, but the blend, which was aged 22 months in French, American and Hungarian oak, is lusty, savory, hedonistic, rich and mouth-filling, with a dense purple color and not a hard edge in sight. This blockbuster fruit bomb has complexity, richness and a savory intensity that has to be tasted to be believed. Kudos to the winery.“.………..83.99

SHAFER NAPA “ONE POINT FIVE”’13 “This powerful, savory bottling named for the two generations behind the family winery opens with toasted barrel and meat aromas before expanding on the nose and palate with additional black pepper and soy components. SILVERADO VINEYARDS NAPA’13  – “Jon Emmerich blends this wine from three estate vineyards—Stag’s Leap, Mt. George and Oakville Station. It’s a deeply mineral-inflected wine, with chipped-stone tannins that are neither pushed nor heavily extracted, but gracious in their taut structure. The purple fruit may be concentrated, but it also has a pretty side, hinting at redder tones and green-olive salinity underneath.”…………76.99

SPOTTSWOODE NAPA’14  “This slightly opaque and ruby colored Cabernet Sauvignon from Spottswoode is Excellent! It opens with a very aromatic red raspberry and black cherry bouquet with a hint of cranberry. On the palate, this wine is medium to full bodied, nicely balanced and a little juicy. The flavor profile is a very tasty black cherry and black currant blend with notes of oak and minerality. The finish is rather dry and its building tannins are substantial, but do not get in the way. The Montafi is marked by a distinctive eucalyptus note, a core of huge, jammy fruit and striking inner perfume. CARLISLE SONOMA “PAPERA”’15 – “A killer effort is the 2015 Zinfandel Papera Ranch, from a vineyard planted in 1934, and made from 96% Zinfandel and 4% Carignan. This is a good-sized wine, given its 15.4% alcohol, but like all of Mike Officer’s wines, the alcohol never shows. Moreover, he clearly gives the fruit plenty of attention so that it can strut its ripeness and full-bodied character, given the fact that he rarely uses more than 20-25% new French oak, and of course, the wines are bottled with no clarification by fining or filtering.”…………66.99

COSENTINO LODI “CIGAR”’15 – Wood smoke and black pepper aromas start this full-bodied wine out with a bang. FROG’S LEAP NAPA’15 –  Like any good zin, this wine needs a lot of time in a decanter to show its best. When first opened, it’s bright, sappy and a little bitter in its red fruit. RIDGE SONOMA GEYERSVILLE “50th  VINTAGE”’15 – “It’s hard to believe that Ridge’s iconic Zinfandel Geyserville celebrates its fiftieth anniversary in 2015. Today, the wine is quite deep, powerful and unyielding. Of course, the low yields of the vintage have a lot to do with that. I am not surprised winemaker Eric Baugher decided to give the 2015 a few more months in barrel, as there is a lot of stuffing here. The interplay of fruit, aromatics and acidity is compelling. Red cherry jam, pomegranate, rose petal and woodsmoke infuse the finish.”…………55.99

ROBERT MONDAVI NAPA “MAESTRO” RED BLEND’14  –  “This year’s blend is a blockbuster, with layer after layer of lush fruit flavors. This is a wine for people who love big, powerful red wines that also have enough acidity and finesse to pair with food.  The current version is a little silkier, with a softer mouthfeel than the 2013 Maestro. The Mondavi folks said the softer mouthfeel comes from the fruit from their Wappo Hill Vineyard in the Stags Leap AVA. The rest of the fruit comes from the revered To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville. It brings structure and power to the finished wine.  This year’s blend is 73 percent cabernet sauvignon, 23 percent cabernet franc and two percent each of merlot and petit verdot. The wine is a gorgeous inky dark red in the glass with enticing aromas. On the palate it is complex, full of juicy plum and cassis, with hints of cinnamon and cocoa. The tannins are rich and well integrated.  The grapes for this wine were hand picked into small bins and carefully sorted at the winery’s gravity-flow cellar. After the clusters are destemmed the grapes go directly into traditional French oak casks for a cool soak, fermentation and extended maceration. The juice remains in direct contact with grape skins for 24 days, bring maximum extraction of varietal characteristics and complexity.  Then the wine was drained and gently pressed into 28 percent new French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation. The final blend was assembled through repeated tasting trials over the 21 months of barrel aging.”…….69.99

PLUMPJACK NAPA’12 – “Riveting aromas of blackberry, black licorice, tar, mocha-laced wood, cedar and plum give this an enticingly complex mix of flavors, yet for all those elements this glides along, cascading on the finish.”…………….72.99

PLUMPJACK NAPA’13 – “The 2013 Syrah is incredibly primary today, with huge blue/purplish fruit and tons of intensity. Like so many 2013’s, the Syrah tastes like a wine that was just drained from tank, the flavors are every bit that intense and unevolved. This is quite possibly the most raw of Plumpjack’s 2013, but the wine’s pure power simply won’t be denied.”…………….83.99

RAMEY SONOMA “SHANEL VINEYARDS” SYRAH’06 – “There’s lots of spices (white and black pepper) but also plenty of grapey dark berry, red licorice, herb, mineral and cedar notes. Very complex, full-blown and well-balanced, becoming even more complex on the finish, where the flavors unfold to reveal subtle nuances.”…67.99

STEELE LAKE COUNTY  “STYMIE” SYRAH’12 – “This wine towers over the competition, and not only because the bottle is an inch and a half taller than most. Its aroma is exotic and compelling, like singed rosemary branches (in a good way). The flavors bring clove, blackberry, ripe blueberry and dried-cherry notes. The texture is buoyed by fine tannins and firm acidity for a feeling of agility and strength.”…..27.99

DOMAINE PIERRE USSEGLIO ET FILS “CUVEE DE MON AIEUL” CHATEANEUF DU PAPE’14 – Up with the crème de la crème of the vintage, the 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul is 100% Grenache, was mostly destemmed, and aged 70% in concrete tank and 30% in one- and two-year-old demi-muids. Full-bodied, rich, nicely concentrated and layered, it’s loaded with Provençal notes of ground herbs, crushed flowers, licorice and black raspberry. It’s a charming, forward example of this cuvee that should have 10-15 years of overall longevity. Both the 2013s and 2014 from the Usseglio brothers are solid, and they have more texture and charm than most in the vintage.”………..132.99

DOMAINE PIERRE USSEGLIO ET FILS ROGUE CHATEANEUF DU PAPE’14 – Elegant, spicy charmer, with a forward personality that shows off its black raspberry, kirsch, and white pepper core quite nicely. Forward in style, this is already quite fun to drink.”………..62.99

LE FLANUER VIN DE FRANCE  CABERNET SAUVIGNON’14 – “One of our favorite ways to explore a foreign city is to drink the local wine and wander the streets aimlessly, soaking it all in. The French call such a person a flaneur, or one who strolls. (We had no idea this was so common a practice that it merited a term.) Of course, after a long day of wandering the cobblestoned streets of Paris, you need a drink – and this straightforward, pleasant Cab is just the right thing. Deftly balanced, with a mix of fruity and savory aromas and flavors, this is the epitome of easy-drinking, everyday French red wine.”…….29.99

SARRIETTE PAYS d’OC CABERNET FRANC’16  –  Sarriette is the French word for savory, and it perfectly describes this mouthwatering and tasty red. A textbook Cabernet Franc, it displays dried herb-inflected flavors of red currant, balanced by a vein of acidity and appetizing tannins.”…………..24.99

Very good length. Pleasant acidity. Youthful tannins. Interesting, intense, high alcohol wine (15% on the label). 100% Grenache.”……….28.99

SHATTER ROUSSILLON GRENACHE’13  – “A collaboration between Napa’s Joel Gott and Dave Phinney, the semi-opaque Cotes Catalanes Grenache is a smoking blend of 100% Grenache that comes from the singular, black schist soils located around the village of Maury, in the Agly Valley in the Roussillon. Aged in French oak (a small part being new) and hitting 15.6% natural alcohol, this sexy, full-bodied, pedal-to-the-metal effort bears plenty of resemblance to the old-vine, 100% Grenache efforts coming from Chateauneuf du Pape. Kirsch liqueur, blackberry, toasted spice, garrigue and hints of vanilla bean all flow nicely to a seamless, silky, yet decadently styled red that has fine tannin, and a blockbuster, heady finish. It will certainly not appease those looking for lightweight aromas and flavors, but count me a fan.”………..29.99

VIGNOBLES BERTHIER DOMAINE DES CLAIRNEAUX SANCERRE ROUGE PINOT NOIR’13  –  “So light in color, this Pinot Noir is almost a rosé. The texture and structure, though, are definitely of a red wine. Firm tannins give a backbone to the red cherry fruitiness and fresh acidity.”……..39.99

ANTINORI GUADO AL TASSO BOLGHERI BORDEAUX RED BLEND’13 – “A bit reticent, with black cherry, black currant and herb flavors married to a supple texture and fine-grained tannins. ARCANUM “IL FAUNO”’10  –  “This Tuscan winery is owned by the enormous Jackson Family of Wines operation, and it’s only the company’s second Italian brand under its umbrella. Tenuta di Arceno’s Il Fauno di Arcanum bottling (not the same as Arcanum) is a Bordeaux-style blend of 56% merlot, 23% cabernet franc, 20% cabernet sauvignon, and 1% petit verdot.  It’s a complex little number, with a nose that kicks off some menthol, dense wood, licorice, and a touch of coal. On the body, more fruit comes through — though restraint is the name of the game — as notes of blackberry and currant emerge, plus a backbone of dark chocolate and a bit of coffee grounds. Some fresh tobacco leaf pops in on the finish. A restrained wine, but one with a lot of charm.”……….48.99

MONTENIDOLI  VERNACCIA DI SAN GIMIGNANO VERNACCIA’14  – “The excellent 2014 Vernaccia di San Gimignano Fiore is made from the precious “mosto fiore” or the the first juice to emerge from the press before the skins, seeds and stems are put under excessive pressure. Italian Other Reds

7 FOLD NORTHERN VERONA VINO DA TAVOLA ROSA’NV – “Like an expertly folded necktie, this incredible Italian red expresses exquisite beauty and taste second to none. Made from grapes grown in the hills of northern Verona, it is structured and flavorful, bursting with delicious black fruit, spice and cedar. The wine was crafted using the Italian ripasso technique, which involves a secondary fermentation using dried grape skins to achieve more complexity and a rich finish.”…….29.99

ELENA FUCCI AGLIANICO DEL VULTURE TITOLO’14 – Earthy aromas of truffle, damp soil, new leather and black-skinned fruit lead the way while the polished palate shows dried black cherry, prune, clove and ground pepper. JOSEPHUS MAYR BOLZANO ALTO ADIGE LAMAREIN’05 – Intense spicy and smoky aromas lead into a palate that is impressive in its solidity yet perked up by acidity that makes it juicy and enjoyable. The licorice finish underlies a very deep close.”……72.99

OASI DEGLI ANGELI KURNI MARCHES’11 – “In 2010, Milano Finanza, Italy’s answer to the Wall Street Journal, had the nation’s top 5 wine arbiters choose the best wine in the country. So, the Gambero Rosso and 4 other wine guides put their heads together and made their selection. A Barolo perhaps? An Amarone? Maybe a Brunello or Super Tuscan? None of the above! The best wine in Italy was Kurni, a Montepulciano made like no other, a special wine made in an innovative and particular way that that bordered on mad genius! Many wine-lovers who hadn’t been paying attention to what was becoming Italy’s most sought after cult wine were shocked! But had they been following the developments for years, the decision might have seemed inevitable. In 2011, to honor Italian unity, Kurni was chosen to present to the President Of The Republic! Stan The Wine Man found this wine 15 years ago and has been its importer and champion from the beginning, espousing its virtues and claiming its rightful status from the outset. Nice to know that someone from Pittsburgh has been cultivating a dedicated local following for such an unknown but prestigious wine all these years.  And we thought he was just another pretty face cruising around town.”…….139.99

PIETRACUPA TAURASI AGLIANICO’08 –  “Deep black cherry with black reflections cherry rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, and slightly reduced at the outset, with menthol and spice, slight berry fruit and slight graphite shavings; the red berry fruit emerges as it opens as does mentholated cedar. On the palate it’s ample and fairly direct, with lively sour cherry and forest berry fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are ample and have a slightly greenish burr, flow into a clean sour berry fruit finish with a cedary tannic underpinning.”………..69.99

SARDUS PATER ARRUGA’08 –  This is a co-op of about 200 growers who each own less than 1 hectare of land and each are meticulous in their winemaking, resulting in wines of remarkable quality from their ungrafted vines.  This wine is aged 9 months in new barriques.”…….69.99

TENUTA SAN LEONARDO TRENTINO’96 – CELLAR AGED SELECTION  – “A beautiful Bordeaux blend, with currant bush, mint and mineral aromas plus a touch of oak. Full-bodied, with polished tannins and a long finish.”…60.99

Spanish Red

ABADIA RETUERTA VINO de la TIERRA de CASTILLA  “SPECIAL SELECTION” TINTO SARDON de DUERO’12  – “The entry-level red and largest volume of Abadía Retuerta, the 2012 Selección Especial, is nothing like the initial oaky versions of it you might remember.  This is produced as a blend of Tempranillo with 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah from the 54 separate plots that they have identified in their 180 hectares of vineyards.  This 2012 matured in French (60%) and American (40%) oak barrels for 14 months, a slightly shorter time than in previous vintages.  The casks were one third new, one third second use and one third third use.  This is the wine that has improved the most, and it’s now a fine, elegant wine with restrained power, true to the place where it’s born and the vintage when the grapes are harvested.  This is the highly recommended wine from the winery.  All grapes ripened properly in 2012 and the Cabernet feels very integrated; there are some spicy aromas intermixed with the wild berry aromas, developing some balsamic undertones, licorice and a little bit of toast.  It is very subtle and nicely compact.  The texture is very fine with dusty tannins, good acidity and freshness.  It is long, balanced and supple, with power and elegance.  The wine is approachable now and with stuffing to age.  It is a great value and highly recommended.”……..38.99

BODEGAS  EL ANGOSTO “LA TRIBU” SYRAH BLEND ’10 – “The entry-level 2010 La Tribu is made up of equal parts Monastrell, Garnacha, and Syrah aged in oak for 4 months. Aromas of meat, game, underbrush, blackberry, and blueberry are followed by a succulent, impeccably balanced, friendly wine that offers outstanding value.”…35.99

CAMPO VIEJO RIOJA GRANACHA’12 – “Violets and dark, heady fruit aromasemerge from the nose of this 2012 Garnacha. A gentle wisp of vanilla bean is present as well. The palate is studded with plum, blueberry and raspberry flavors. Spices such as pepper and clove are present as well and lead to the finish which shows off rhubarb and strawberry as well as tiny bits of anise seed. The finish has solid length.”….18.99

CELLARS CAPAFONS-OSSO “MONSANT MASIA ESPLANES”’03 – CELLAR AGED SELECTION “Rugged tannins give way to roasted plum, coffee and earth flavors in this solid, rustic red.  Has grip, but it’s tough. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Garnacha and Carinena”…44.99

CIMS DE PORRERA “PRIORAT CLASSIC”’01 – CELLAR AGED SELECTION  – Ripe, almost roasted, with black cherry, wild herb, licorice and black pepper notes.  Has rich, round tannins and good concentration, but remains balanced and generous, with a spicy finish.”…93.99

CONTINO RIOJA GRAN RESERVA’08  – “The 2008 Reserva is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% between Mazuelo and Garnacha, inox fermented and aged in used oak barrels of which 40% were made of American wood and the rest were French. 2008 was a challenging vintage and they didn’t produce many of the special wines that year, so the best fruit went towards the Reserva. It has a very lactic, sweet nose, with notes of orange rind and cherries. As Contino is a warm vineyard, the cold years make for quite balanced wines, and this 2008 has good acidity, not terribly complex, but clean with a slight herbaceous touch. Fine-grained tannins and acidity will make it age gracefully.”……..65.99

CUNE  RIOJA GRAN RESERVA’09  – “Tea, underbrush and tobacco notes give this red a traditional, savory character, while fresh cherry and leafy flavors keep this lively. Balanced and graceful, with polished tannins and a floral finish.”……..46.99

CUNE  RIOJA GRAN RESERVA’10  – “This generous red shows a traditional character, with leafy, dried herb, tea and spice notes framing dried cherry, licorice and leather flavors. Firm tannins and balsamic acidity impart structure, and this shows plenty of depth, with a juicy, spicy finish.”……..42.99

SANTO CRISTO CAMPO DE BORJA GRANACHA’12  – “The northern Spanish region of Campo de Borja is known for hot weather, very little rain and their expertise with the Garnacha grape. What this charming wine lacks in seriousness it more than makes up for in juicy, fruity drinkability and its fantastically low price. Peppery, juicy, red berry fruits and balancing freshness.”……..20.99

TANDEM ARS MEMORIA’07– “Deep dark plum colored.  Mature nose with notes of black currant (cassis), spices, black pepper, chocolate and cedar.  Fine tannins on the palate, with volume, long, friendly, with a long, elegant finish.  Fresh and elegant.”………62.99

TELMO RODRIQUEZ ALICANTE “AL-MUVEDRE” MONASTRELL’15  –  “Leafy minty blueberry aromas announce this jammy Monastrell. There’s no oak on this, nor much give to a linear flat palate. Blueberry flavors hold onto the nose’s grassy herbal essence, while the finish tastes peppery and vaguely green.”…….23.99

TORRES GRAN CORONAS PENEDES “RESERVA’”10  – Cherry and fresh cedar aromas from the cork. Savoury nicotine, smoky and earthy nose, followed by herbal and blackberry aromas of medium+ intensity. Palate is medium-bodied with lively acids. Oak spice, red & black cherry, herbal flavour profile. Medium+ level tannins and a long, warm, oak-spiced and bitter chocolate finish. Spice calmed down to a more pleasing level with air.”………………..26.99

South African

OHENE WELLINGTON PINOTAGE’16 – “Pinotage is a hybrid between Pinot Noir and Cinsault that’s grown almost exclusively in South Africa.  It produces deep red wines high in tannins with smoky dark fruit flavors accented by earthy bramble characteristics. Pinotage is also commonly blended with other varieties, producing what is referred to as a Cape Blend in South Africa.”…………29.99

Port / Portugal

CASA  SANTOS  LIMA  CONFIDENCIAL LISBOA  “RESERVE” RED BLEND’10  – “Full of tannins at this stage, it shows power and density. It’s a blend of more than 10 varieties, giving complexity as well as structure. There is acidity as well, bringing together the rich texture and a solid, wood and dark fruit combination.”…23.99

EMILIO LUSTAU EAST INDIA SPANISH “SOLERA” SHERRY’NV  – “This is a style that was popular in the 19th century with the British colonists in India. By the time the sherry had been shipped to India it was quite mellowed with a burnt sugar edge to the flavour. These days it is made from 2/3 Oloroso and 1/3 Pedro Ximénez aged for 9 years then put back into barrel. It is placed in the hottest part of the winery and water is sprayed daily onto the floor to produce the humidity. Unlike the wine made from 100% Palomino Fino, thiswine can be opened and held for several weeks. The sample was a deep, thick, coffee coloured wine. Rich raisin scents with just the faintest hint of beef tea. A clean style and not as viscous as I would have imagined. It has all the nutty, dried fruit characters of the Oloroso wine but mocha and caramel too. A rich, powerful wine and I can see why it was so popular.”…….32.99

QUINTA VALE D MARIA – VAN ZELLER DOURO “RUFO” RED’10  –  “Well-rounded, with rich spice and fruit flavors, including plum compote, raspberry tart and nutmeg. A rich vein of chocolate, with light minty accents, runs through to the luscious finish.”…….27.99

Tasting thePort shows a nice velvety smooth texture with sweet black berries, raspberry, and black currant flavors plus a bit of toffee and chocolate. The finish has a bit of heat and then the sweet flavors linger nicely.”….39.99

MOET CHANDON GRAND VINTAGE ROSE’08 – “Those who remember the previous 2006 Grand Vintage Rosé from Moët & Chandon will be pleasantly surprised by the just-released 2008 Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage Rosé ($90). While still reflecting the floral fruitiness of the Grand Vintage style, the 2008 vintage possesses a spicier depth, thanks to a composition of 46 percent Pinot Noir, 32 percent Chardonnay, and 22 percent Pinot Meunier. This results in greater complexities, finer bubbles, and a noticeably sharper crispness.” ………………….91.99

MOET CHANDON GRAND VINTAGE’08 – “Just beginning to mature, this balanced, ripe wine is complex, with bright acidity, toast and pear and green-plum fruits. It is rich, with a tight mouse that shows intensity as well as a stylish character.”………83.99

VEUVE CLICUOT PONSARDIN BRUT’04 – “Here Dominique Demarville looks to tannins to provide complex structure, so the wine is compatible with a wide range of foods. One of the keys is the component that goes into the oak fermenters. The pinots (noir 62%, meunier 8%) do much of the heavy lifting, and the 7g/l dosage does not obscure the citrus/mineral streak that runs through the back-palate and finish.”………..83.99

“Has the same apparent composition as the NV Yellow Label of 50-52% pinot noir, 30% chardonnay and 18-20% pinot meunier; but here there is 12% pinot noir table wine included in the total pinot component. Demarville says it is the most difficult wine to make; the red wine tannins must be managed so that the creamy mouthfeel is maintained without denying the strawberry-accented fruit flavours their distinct point of difference.”………..79.99

VEUVE CLICUOT ROSE’08  – “A delicious vintage rosé fizz from the maestros at Veuve Clicquot. Dependably brilliant, with a depth of flavour and complexity very rarely found.”………..88.99

VEUVE CLICUOT DEMI SEC’NV – “Like a sweeter version of a good blanc de blancs, with graphite, honey and lemon notes that mix with the richness and lively
