American Wines Cabernet

AMAPOLA CREEK SONOMA “ESTATE”’12  – On the nose, this wine opens with a dusting of cocoa powder, followed by smooth black fruit. Swirl the glass for a moment and the fruit character expands into tart red pie cherries and rich, dark cassis. Give the wine another moment to open up, and you will find just the tiniest hint of white peppercorn mingling with toast. On the palate you will first notice firm acidity, and a delightful character of ripe summer blackberries. Stay with the glass and you will find juicy plum and boysenberry, underscored with subtle notes of candied orange peel and almond liqueur, all laced together with strong, smooth tannins that persist into a lengthy elegant finish.”……….119.99

Opaque ruby/purple with beautiful blueberry and black raspberry fruit moving toward cassis on the palate, it is plush, medium to full-bodied, well-delineated, juicy and succulent. This is another terrific 2013. This one was aged 22 months in barrel, but 60% was new oak, and it was never fined prior to bottling.”…………199.99

FRANK FAMILY NAPA’13  – “Made in sizable quantities, this impressive wine should please a wide range of palates in its mix of restraint and hearty structure. Layered and multidimensional with terrific opulence and purity, this is a “wow” wine, and while drinkable now.”…………359.99

RAVAGE CALIFORNIA’15  In the glass, expect a dense, dark plum and black cherry hue. The purple aspects indicate that the wine is still quite young (though this isn’t necessarily a bad thing). The nose is loaded with dark fruits, cassis, some cedar tones, plum and blueberry. On the opening palate, juicy blackberry cobbler flavors, blueberry creme brulee and vanilla cola tones instantly become evident. The body is largely medium.  Pay close attention to your palate as the wine progresses across the tongue. You should be able to pick up more vanilla and toasted oak tones, indicative of the New French Oak aging. Tannins are soft and velvety, making for a very pleasant, mildly astringent drinking experience.  Towards the back-end of the palate, dark cherry, pomegranate and more plum tones layer across damp forest floor. Finish is medium in length.”………29.99

SMITH & HOOK CENTRAL COAST’14  – BOLD:  Juicy, Black Cherry, Dark Fruits, Spice. The Smith Ranch had been a horse ranch, while the Hook Ranch had raised cattle for generations; their prime location provided a perfect setting for growing premium varietal fruit. This blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot and Merlot was aged in two-thirds new French oak for almost two years prior to bottling. Finesse style black and red currants compete with some tobacco leaf and loamy soil undertones in a medium-bodied, deliciously fruity, sexy style that offers immediate drinkability .”……………69.99

SULLIVAN RUTHERFORD-NAPA’14  – “Rutherford may be the Napa Valley’s most prized appellation with its gravelly sands reminiscent of the Bordelais terroir, which so perfectly ripens Cabernet Sauvignon in France. This fantastic Cab-dominant blend highlights the richness that the region provides with luscious dark fruit, delicate oak integration, and notions of the famous earthiness and texture known as “Rutherford dust”.………59.99

TRIONE ALEXANDER “BLOCK TWENTY ONE”’10  While the producer holds back its heartier reds in bottle before release, this complex, rich wine will keep going with more cellaring, giving it a chance to further hone its already-developed layers of leather, earth and backbone of black fruit. TURNBULL NAPA “OAKVILLE”’ 13 Turnbull’s 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville, their least expensive wine in the portfolio is the most forward and precocious of the cuvées and shows what great winemaking and vineyard sources the Turnbulls are dealing with. The color is opaque purple, the wine shows slightly less tannins than its counterparts, with gorgeously intense blueberry and blackberry fruit, cedar wood, forest floor and spice box. It’s full-bodied, opulent, rich and, while still young with a good 10 years of upside, this wine will still be drinking great 20 years from now.”……139.99
