American Wines Red Zinfandel

BOGLE LODI’13 – “ Deep, rich blackberry and red licorice compete for attention, enlivened by aromas of pepper, cinnamon and fresh pencil shavings. Some apparent alcohol is distracting. Soft and round but with good acidity and a mineral core that makes the wine feel lively on the palate. A medium length, flavorful finish with soft tannins and no hint of sourness.”…….32.99

BRIDGES WINE CO. SONOMA’12 – “ From two wonderful Zin vineyards in the Sonoma Valley, Bedrock and Casa Santinamaria, this producer coaxes out spicy, dusty cinnamon and structured blackberry, the oak subtle yet present. With tannins managed and a firm structure holding things up, the finish shows a subtle hint of herb.” …………………..37.99

CARLISLE SONOMA “PAPERA”’15 – “A killer effort is the 2015 Zinfandel Papera Ranch, from a vineyard planted in 1934, and made from 96% Zinfandel and 4% Carignan. This is a good-sized wine, given its 15.4% alcohol, but like all of Mike Officer’s wines, the alcohol never shows. Moreover, he clearly gives the fruit plenty of attention so that it can strut its ripeness and full-bodied character, given the fact that he rarely uses more than 20-25% new French oak, and of course, the wines are bottled with no clarification by fining or filtering.”…………99.99

FROG’S LEAP NAPA’15 –  Like any good zin, this wine needs a lot of time in a decanter to show its best. When first opened, it’s bright, sappy and a little bitter in its red fruit. A few hours later, it’s rounded by dark berry flavors, the fruit racy and fresh. It’s still clean and fresh the next day, with lovely crunchy red fruit—better, in fact, than the day before. Frog’s Leap consistently produces a classic Napa Valley zinfandel, farming organically and without irrigating the vines.”…….68.99

JOSEPH JEWELL DRY CREEK-SONOMA “GRIST VINEYARD”’15 – “From a sloping hillside at 1,000-feet in elevation, this is a beautiful vineyard-designate and ambassador for the variety: shy in fruit at first, which only allows its floral, earthy aspects of ash and rock to shine. Black pepper and leather boost an array of tangy cherry, raspberry and plum that remains tart and fresh.”……81.99

NEYERS CENTRAL VALLEY “VISTA LUNA”’16 – This is a well-made, full-flavored and firm-textured wine that offers fresh raspberry and cherry aromas, generous flavors and moderate tannins that give a little grip to the mouthfeel. Good balance and a little restraint in ripeness make it especially appealing.”……….46.99

PEIRANO LODI “HERITAGE OLD VINE”’15  – Bright dark garnet color. Toasty aromas and flavors of nutella on raisin toast, roasted chestnuts, and chocolate fondue with a supple, tangy, fruity medium body and a seamless, captivating, long sour cherries, black raspberries in cream, chocolate toffee, and pepper finish with fine, crunchy tannins and light oak. A delicious zinfandel bursting with flavor and varietal character.”………….36.99

RIDGE SONOMA GEYERSVILLE “50th VINTAGE”’15 – “It’s hard to believe that Ridge’s iconic Zinfandel Geyserville celebrates its fiftieth anniversary in 2015. Today, the wine is quite deep, powerful and unyielding. Of course, the low yields of the vintage have a lot to do with that. I am not surprised winemaker Eric Baugher decided to give the 2015 a few more months in barrel, as there is a lot of stuffing here. The interplay of fruit, aromatics and acidity is compelling. Red cherry jam, pomegranate, rose petal and woodsmoke infuse the finish.”…………84.99

ROMBAUER  NAPA’16 – “While not everyone in the global wine world has bought into full-bodied, rounded, and very fruity California Zinfandels, I have found the wines enticing and intriguing. The 2016 Rombauer Vineyards Zinfandel is very New World in style. The wine’s truckload of berries and satiny-smooth palate.”…………….70.99

STEELE MENDOCINO “PACINI”’15 – Engaging and nicely oaky but also well structured, this full-bodied wine has dense layers of ripe fruity spicy flavors and almost chewy tannins. It is concentrated, deep and with a lengthy finish.”………42.99

TERRA D’ORO AMADOR’15 – This terrific wine has vibrant fruit flavors and feelings of focus and energy on the palate. Firm acidity and fine-grained tannins add structure and lend support to the spicy oak and ripe cherry and blackberry nuances that start in the aromas and carry through the taste and finish.”……….35.99
