American Wines Sirah & Syrah

ARNOT-ROBERTS SONOMA COAST SYRAH’15 – “Made with fruit from a selection of vineyards across the Sonoma Coast, this is a restrained and elegant Californian Syrah packed with black fruit flavours and an earthy complexit. Fresh and bright; damson and plum fruit on the palate; firm tannins on the finish. The fruit for this wine comes from a series of cool-climate vineyards on the Sonoma Coast.”…….75.99

CASAEDA SONOMA SYRAH’12 – “This is a major sleeper of the vintage as well as a great value in California Syrah from Karen Culler. Made from 100% Syrah, it offers up luscious notes of ripe blackberry fruit, incense and a touch of white flowers. Deep and medium to full-bodied with silky tannins and a layered mouthfeel.”…..45.99

CHARLES SMITH “K VINTNERS” MILBRANDT WALHUKE WALLA WALLA SYRAH’12………………65.99

CHARLES SMITH COLUMBIA VALLEY “BOOM BOOM” SYRAH15 – “Dark, deep, ruby-red colour with black hues. The nose is full and well-packed with concentrated aromas of ripe blackberry fruit harmoniously layered with notes of earth and minerals, along with herbs and subtle whole bunch stalk elements, unfolding dark raspberries and liquorice notes. Medium-full bodied, the palate has deep and concentrated flavours of ripe blackberries with dark herbs, aniseed, earth and mineral notes, along with black pepper and spices. The flavours are up-front and show a complexing savouriness, and are enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity, and underlined by fine, grainy tannin extraction. The grip carries the wine lingering, nuanced finish of blackberries, chocolate and herbs. This is an up front Syrah with flavours of blackberries, earth, herbs and minerals, with black pepper, liquorice and spices on a grainy-textured, brisk palate.  A blend of 96% Syrah, 3% Viognier and 1% Grenache from 5 sites.”………39.99

CONCANNON SAN FRANCISCO BAY PETITE SIRAH’13 – It’s a friendly wine, but a big wine.  Fermented in stainless steel, the Founders’ Tier Petite Sirah went into oak barrels and was finished in neutral French barrels saturated with 50 vintages of Petite Sirah.  The wine is inky dark from skin contact, which also makes it rich in tannins.  The AVA is San Francisco Bay, and the fruit came from Livermore, where the winery is located.”…29.99

CONCANNON CENTRAL COAST “FOUNDERS” PETITE SIRAH14  – “Intriguing floral aromas like rose petals and appetizing, fresh berry flavors are tempting in this medium-bodied and not-too-tannic wine. While still firm in texture.”………29.99

DONELAN SONOMA “CUVEE CHRISTINE” SYRAH’13 – “A bold, explosive wine, the 2013 Syrah Cuvée Christine possesses striking, vivid aromatics, pulsating energy and exceptional balance. Rose petal, blood orange, pomegranate, exotic spice and herbs are all bright and beautifully delineated in the glass.”……85.99

DONELAN SONOMA “CUVEE KELTIE” SYRAH’13 – “The 2013 Syrah Cuvée Keltie is a wine built around three single-vineyard choices – Walker Vine Hill, Obsidian and Richards. One hundred percent of the stems are used during fermentation. No new oak is employed, and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered after 20 months. Terrific aromatics of black olive tapenade, sweet blackberry and cassis, licorice, truffle and spice all jump from the glass of this full-bodied, tightly structured, spicy and very layered wine that builds incrementally and finishes with extravagant richness and rather big structure.”……159.99

DONELAN SONOMA “KOBLER FAMILY VINEYARD” SYRAH’13 – “The family of Syrahs at Donelan are all stunning, and several have a Côte-Rôtie-like personality. Certainly that’s true of the 2013 Syrah Kobler Family Vineyard, which is 90% Syrah co-fermented with 10% Viognier and aged in about 7% new oak for 20 months prior to bottling. From a cool site in Green Valley, this wine displays sweet blackberry, black cherry, white peach and apricot notes that soar from the glass in the uplifted aromatics. The wine hits the palate with flesh, a Côte-Rôtie-like elegance and complexity, and a medium to full-bodied, long finish.”……99.99

DONELAN SONOMA “WALKER VINE HILL” SYRAH’13 – “This pitch black colored Syrah from Donelan is very good. It opens with a mild blackberry and black pepper like bouquet. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, slightly acidic, juicy and savory at the same time. The flavor profile is a black raspberry and mild mineral blend with notes of plum and black licorice. I also detected some hints of black pepper, blueberry and oak towards the end. The finish is dry and its moderate tannins are nicely prolonged. This very good Syrah get better the longer it is open.”……119.99

FOUR CAIRN NAPA SYRAH15 –A serious and very well done Syrah,  the Four Cairn Syrah, 100% Syrah aged for 16 months in 45% new French oak, delivers a straight up fantastic array of cassis, smoked bacon, pepper, game, and violets on the nose. Both rich and yet fresh at the same time, this medium to full-bodied Syrah is perfectly balanced, possessing good concentration, a pure, seamless texture, and a classic, focused finish.  I’m a fan and this has a northern Rhône like complexity paired with California fruit.”…………79.99

K VINTNER WAHLUKE SLOPE “THE HIDDEN” SYRAH’11 – “Aged in 100% new 500 liter barrels, the 2011 Syrah The Hidden Northridge Vineyard is an incredible Syrah that gives up pure aromas and flavors of blackberry, ground pepper, minerality, and dried spices and hints of vanilla in its full-bodied, elegant and seamless profile. Slightly more mid-weight than prior vintages, yet with beautiful concentration and solid mid-palate depth.”……109.99

PLUMPJACK NAPA’13 – The 2013 Syrah is incredibly primary today, with huge blue/purplish fruit and tons of intensity. Like so many 2013’s, the Syrah tastes like a wine that was just drained from tank, the flavors are every bit that intense and unevolved. This is quite possibly the most raw of Plumpjack’s 2013, but the wine’s pure power simply won’t be denied.”…………….119.99

RED CAR SONOMA COAST’12………69 .99

STEELE LAKE COUNTY  “STYMIE” SYRAH’12 – “This wine towers over the competition, and not only because the bottle is an inch and a half taller than most. Its aroma is exotic and compelling, like singed rosemary branches (in a good way). The flavors bring clove, blackberry, ripe blueberry and dried-cherry notes. The texture is buoyed by fine tannins and firm acidity for a feeling of agility and strength.”…..39.99
