Spanish Wines Red

ABADIA RETUERTA VINO de la TIERRA de CASTILLA  “SPECIAL SELECTION” TINTO SARDON de DUERO’12  – The entry-level red and largest volume of Abadía Retuerta, the 2012 Selección Especial, is nothing like the initial oaky versions of it you might remember.  This is produced as a blend of Tempranillo with 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah from the 54 separate plots that they have identified in their 180 hectares of vineyards.  This 2012 matured in French (60%) and American (40%) oak barrels for 14 months, a slightly shorter time than in previous vintages.  The casks were one third new, one third second use and one third third use.  This is the wine that has improved the most, and it’s now a fine, elegant wine with restrained power, true to the place where it’s born and the vintage when the grapes are harvested.  This is the highly recommended wine from the winery.  All grapes ripened properly in 2012 and the Cabernet feels very integrated; there are some spicy aromas intermixed with the wild berry aromas, developing some balsamic undertones, licorice and a little bit of toast.  It is very subtle and nicely compact.  The texture is very fine with dusty tannins, good acidity and freshness.  It is long, balanced and supple, with power and elegance.  The wine is approachable now and with stuffing to age.  It is a great value and highly recommended.”……..56.99

CELLARS CAPAFONS-OSSO “MONSANT MASIA ESPLANES”’03 – CELLAR AGED SELECTION “Rugged tannins give way to roasted plum, coffee and earth flavors in this solid, rustic red.  Has grip, but it’s tough. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Garnacha and Carinena…62.99

CIMS DE PORRERA “PRIORAT CLASSIC”’01 – CELLAR AGED SELECTION  – Ripe, almost roasted, with black cherry, wild herb, licorice and black pepper notes.  Has rich, round tannins and good concentration, but remains balanced and generous, with a spicy finish.…133.99

CONTINO RIOJA GRAN RESERVA’08  – The 2008 Reserva is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% between Mazuelo and Garnacha, inox fermented and aged in used oak barrels of which 40% were made of American wood and the rest were French. 2008 was a challenging vintage and they didn’t produce many of the special wines that year, so the best fruit went towards the Reserva. It has a very lactic, sweet nose, with notes of orange rind and cherries. As Contino is a warm vineyard, the cold years make for quite balanced wines, and this 2008 has good acidity, not terribly complex, but clean with a slight herbaceous touch. Fine-grained tannins and acidity will make it age gracefully.”……..92.99

CUNE  RIOJA GRAN RESERVA’09  – Tea, underbrush and tobacco notes give this red a traditional, savory character, while fresh cherry and leafy flavors keep this lively. Balanced and graceful, with polished tannins and a floral finish.”……..66.99

CUNE  RIOJA GRAN RESERVA’10  – This generous red shows a traditional character, with leafy, dried herb, tea and spice notes framing dried cherry, licorice and leather flavors. Firm tannins and balsamic acidity impart structure, and this shows plenty of depth, with a juicy, spicy finish.”……..59.99

TANDEM ARS MEMORIA’07 Deep dark plum colored.  Mature nose with notes of black currant (cassis), spices, black pepper, chocolate and cedar.  Fine tannins on the palate, with volume, long, friendly, with a long, elegant finish.  Fresh and elegant.”………89.99

VIZAR CASTILLA-LEON “SPECIAL SELECTION” RED BLEND09 –Oaky, inky aromas of blackberry and vanilla are pushy and potent. This blend of 50% Tempranillo and 50% Syrah is rubbery and pinched on the palate, while toasty, rooty flavors of black fruits blend with herbal berry and coffee notes. A narrow finish is herbal in flavor and weighty.”………69.99
