BNY Mellon Grand Classics: Mahler’s Third

Posted on

Sunday, June 13th is your last chance to experience Mahler’s Third! Manfred Honeck, conductor Jane Irwin, mezzo-soprano Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh Children’s Festival Chorus of Pittsburgh Mahler: Symphony No. 3 Conductor Bruno Walter described Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 as “nature transformed into sound.” Indeed, the first half is all about winter being replaced by summer, alpine meadows, and animals in the forest. Angels sing and the heavens open up before us. Mahler once said, “A symphony must be like the world—it must contain everything.” In the Third Symphony, his inexhaustible imagination proves his point.
