Music 101 with Joan Tower: “Choreographing Sound”
Wednesday, October 20th 2010 from 2:30 – 1:30 p.m.
Joan Tower, PSO Composer of the Year and guest speaker. Presented by the Pittsburgh Symphony Association, Music 101 is a lunchtime lecture series of informal presentations, providing the community with opportunities to hear personal insights from PSO musicians, conductors and key personnel. Held in an intimate setting at Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts, this informative series is FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Doors open and lunch served at 11:15 am, no reservations necessary. BNY Mellon Grand Classics: Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No1
Thursday, October 21st at 1:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, October 22nd – 23rd at 8:00 p.m.

Leonard Slatkin, conductor; Olga Kern, piano. Tower: For the Uncommon Woman; Tower: Made in America; Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 1; Dvořák: Symphony No. 6. Joan Tower composed the fanfare, For the Uncommon Woman, to honor adventurous women and Made in America as a commission for 65 U.S. orchestras in all 50 states. Winner of the Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition, Olga Kern debuts in Rachmaninoff’s seldom-heard First Piano Concerto. Although composed in the Viennese symphonic tradition, Dvořák’s Sixth Symphony unmistakably portrays his Czech heritage.
