Wine To Go: French Reds

French Reds

Bordeaux

ANDRE LUTRON PESSAC LEOGNAC “CRUZEAU”’10  –  Features a juicy, sleek feel, with a strong roasted mesquite and sanguine frame that keeps the core of damson plum, red currant and blackberry fruit moving along. The tight-grained finish has a smoldering charcoal hint.”…….41.99

CHATEAU BONALGUE POMEROL’09  –  “This appealingly affordable Pomerol is another good wine from the 2009 Bordeaux vintage.  It is fashioned by Château Bonalgue and is a blend of 90% merlot and 10% cabernet franc.  Its aromatics remind of plums, spice, earth and cigar box.  The palate sees medium length and balanced flavours of earth, plum and cigar box.  This wine benefits from a beguiling length and interest.”…………104.99

CHATEAU CANTENAC BROWN MARGAUX’12 – “Earthy, tobacco, fresh, bright, crisp, cassis and dark cocoa, with a tannic, energetic, smooth finish.”………..91.99

CHATEAU DE PEZ SAINT ESTEPHE MERLOT BLEND’15 – “The 2015 Château de Pez is a blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 51% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, matured in one-third new oak, the rest in one- and two-year-old barrels. It has a bold and generous nose of kirsch and blueberry, quite high-toned, but perhaps lacking some complexity underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin. It is nicely balanced, gently grippy in the mouth with a harmonious finish, but what it lacks is the persistence on the finish that would have nailed it as a great wine.”………97.99

CHATEAU DES TOURTES CUVEE PRESTIGE ROUGE’15………….41.99

CHATEAU TOURTERAN HAUT MEDOC’10 – Powerful, concentrated wine, a very solid Cabernet-dominated wine. It has dark tannins, the black currant fruit still hiding in the background. Dark and dense.”…….34.99

CHATEAU HAUT BERGEY PESSAC LEOGNANC’09- “Bright cherry and berry fruit flavors nestle in a broad, soft texture in this juicy red, which has bright acidity, modest tannins and an herbal, floral finish that’s fresh and focused. Not a blockbuster, but balanced and harmonious.”………89.99

CHATEAU HAUT-BEAUSEJOUR SAINT ESTEPHE CABERNET BLEND’15 – “The 2015 Haut-Beauséjour is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot. It has a tightly wound, slightly subdued bouquet that just feels a little static in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, quite fine tannin, well balanced and detailed with truffle and cedar-infused black fruit. It might lack the substance of its counterparts south in Pauillac, yet I still consider this to be a well-crafted wine that should offer a decade of pleasure.”………62 .99

CHATEAU HAUT PLANTEY HAUT MEDOC MERLOT BLEND’14………….23.99

CHATEAU LASSEGUE VIGNOT’09 – “Powerful and rich, this has sweet tannins that overlay a juicy blackberry-jelly flavor. It is sumptuous and opulent, squeezing out every bit of richness. It has weight, and its tannins offer a fine future.”……113.99

CHATEAU LASSEGUE “LES CADRANS”’12………37.99

CHATEAU-NENIN FUGUE DE NENIN’10 – “Soft, friendly, forward and open-knit, with plum, grape and blackberry fruit. A gentle kiss of singed vanilla and a flash of graphite appear on the finish.”…….73.99

CHATEAU PHELAN SEGUR SAINT ESTEPHE’08- “Offers good medium-bodied flesh, with mulled plum, smoked apple wood and tobacco leaf notes that give way a bit to a slightly taut structure on the finish.”………89.99

LES CADRANS DE LASSEQUE ST. EMILION MERLOT BLEND’10 – “60% merlot, 30% cabernet franc, 10% cabernet sauvignon. A great vintage, this wine has a dark, deep color with very vibrant and lively fruit flavors. Les Cadrans has an amazing elegance, with well-integrated, round, silky tannins and barrel aging that is almost undetectable.”…….46.99

Rhone

BONPAS VENTOUX GRENACHE BLEND’13 – “A well-built red wine with pleasing tannins. Smooth yet chewy, there is a nice lenght providing lasting aromas on the nose.”……….23.99

DOMAINE ANDRE BRUNEL SOUTHERN RHONE COTES DU RHONE ’13…….23.99

DOMAINE DU PEGAU “RESERVE” CHATEANEUF DU PAPE’09- “Dark and dense, with stunning espresso, warm ganache and roasted plum aromas giving way to layers of black currant, braised fig and licorice root. The long, grip-filled finish is framed by a strong roasted mesquite edge and a lingering note of brick dust. A wild wine, with loads going on.”………..134.99

DOMAINE LA SOUMADE RASTEAU “CUVEE PRESTIGE”’11  –  “Opaque, deep purple complexion with lavish aromas of fresh blackberry, dark cherries and even hints of blue fruit are layered with damp earth, lavender and black pepper.”……..51.99

DOMAINE USSEGLIO “CUVEE DE MON AIEVL CHAT DU PAPE’07..157.99

DOMAINE PIERRE USSEGLIO ET FILS ROGUE CHATEANEUF DU PAPE’14 – Elegant, spicy charmer, with a forward personality that shows off its black raspberry, kirsch, and white pepper core quite nicely. Forward in style, this is already quite fun to drink.”………..62.99

DOMAINE PIERRE USSEGLIO ET FILS RESERVE “DES DEUX FERES” CHATEANEUF DU PAPE’15 ………..214.99

DOMAINE PIERRE USSEGLIO ET FILS “LIRAC” ROGUE’15 – Tasted as a final blend, but not yet bottled, the 2015 Lirac is 60% Grenache, 15% each of Mourvèdre and Syrah and the rest Cinsault, all aged in equal parts tank and once and twice used demi-muids. There’s only 600 cases made, and it has terrific density and depth, with notes of blackcurrants, black cherries and licorice. Nicely concentrated and textured.”………..44.99

DOMAINE PIERRE USSEGLIO ET FILS “PANORAMA” GRENACHE BLEND’15 ………..27.99

E. GUIGAL RHONE  “CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE”’13  –  “The 2013 Chateauneuf du Pape is the current release, having spent three years in foudres prior to bottling. It’s ready to drink, yet it still has some tannin to offer and marries that structure to notes of cherries, leather and licorice on the supple finish.”…….73.99

FERRATON PERE & FILS CROZES HERMITAGE “LA MATINIERE” ROUGE SYRAH’15…………….36.99

LOUIS BERNARD  SOUTHERN RHONE COTES DU RHONE”’12 – “Light, with modest sandalwood and cherry notes, backed by a lightly dusty hint on the finish.”………20.99

TOUR SAINT-MICHEL-CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE ROGUE “CUVEE DU LION”’10 – Even more powerful, with denser fruit, is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape La Tour du Lion. Sumptuous, full-bodied, and opulent, with impressive fruit purity in its notes of blackberry, black raspberry and black cherry intermixed with hints of pen ink, incense and forest floor, it’s a beauty and again very Provencal.”……………69.99

TOUR SAINT SAINT-MICHEL CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE “ROGUE FEMINESSANCE”’10“The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Feminessance is extraordinary. Opaque ruby/purple, with a beautiful nose of lavender and blackberry liqueur as well as hints of white chocolate, espresso roast, raspberries and kirsch, its multi-layered mouthfeel, stunning purity and longnfinish suggest a wine that has 15 or more years in it.”……………………101.99

AUX TROIS FRERES COTES DE CASTILLON’06 – “Dark garnet, great concentration. Flamboyant nose, very sweet floral, confected bubble gum–almost Fun Dip, with distinct green pepper edges, vanilla, black cherry. Palate picks up with black cherry/cranberry fruit, high acidity, excellent balance, grenadine nuances toward a lengthy finish. Solid, enjoyable wine.”…………44.99

DAVID PHINNEY MAURY FRANCE “OTHERS PROPRIETARY BLEND”’14  – A blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan.  The wine has a ruby, purple opaque hue with aromas of licorice, spring flowers, campfire, toast and sweet vanilla. ORIN SWIFT COTES CATALANES “D66” GRENACHE’09 – “This is a true Orin Swift wine- rich, opulent, hedonistic, and seductive. Almost black in color, it’ll coat your glass with silky layers of dark fruit, spice, and moist earth. Notes of bitter cherry, raisins, toasty vanilla, and exotic Asian spices are all perfectly balanced out in the 15.2 alcohol content.   A nice amount of tannin on the finish distinguishes it from just your average big nasty fruit bomb.  It’s truly gorgeous.”…61.99

VIGNOBLES BERTHIER DOMAINE DES CLAIRNEAUX SANCERRE ROUGE PINOT NOIR’13  –  “So light in color, this Pinot Noir is almost a rosé. The texture and structure, though, are definitely of a red wine. Firm tannins give a backbone to the red cherry fruitiness and fresh acidity.”……..41.99
