American Wines Chardonnay

10 SPAN VINEYARDS SANTA BARBARA’13………………..23.99

ALEXANA WILLAMETTE TERRIOR”’15  “In an emerging Oregon style for Chardonnay, this 10th anniversary vintage release is accessible yet firm. Compact lime and apple fruit carries lightly-applied notes of new wood. There are also carefully balanced suggestions of butter and banana, which may indicate full or partial malolactic fermentation. In any event it’s a tasty, balanced and ready-to-go wine.”………24.99

ALMA ROSA SANTA RITA HILLS “EL JABLAI VINEYARD”’05 – “Intense, with vibrant, earthy citrus, green pear, quince and lime notes that are clean and refreshing.”…46.99

BALLETTO RUSSIAN RIVER “TERESA’S UNOAKED”’14 – “The first sip shows that this is definitely not what you’d expect of a popular “California Chard.” It’s much leaner and quite lemony, more Chablis style than Californian, with lemon notes running through the palate, followed by pear and peach. Overall, the wine is very light and almost astringent, with citrusy acidity persevering through into the finish. Its acidity makes it a good food wine.”…….33.99

CAMBRIDGE & SUNSET CALIFORNIA’09 …12.99

CHAMISAL CENTRAL COAST “STAINLESS”’10 – “The wine offers a lovely nose of flint, green mango, apple skins, with a hint of petrol. There are some vegetal notes underlying the overall aromas. It’s somewhat citrusy, with pineapple and tropical fruits coming across as the wine opens up. On the palate, its tart, with lots of fruits, a hint of vegetal, orange pith, lemon oil, and a nice minerality.  The wine has good body, and a nice, long finish. As it evolves in the mouth, it moves from citrus to green apples, with underlying notes of talc. It’s a very nice wine.”………….16.99

CHARLES SMITH WASHINGTON “EVE”’16 – “Simple and Pinot Grigio-like, this Washington Chardonnay has soft notes of red apple, macerated lemon, and a touch of rocky minerality. The medium-bodied palate adds in some spice, but overall, it lacks interest.”………18.99

ETUDE CARNEROS “GRACE BENOIST”’14– “This well-made wine lies on the crisper, lighter-bodied style of the equation, softly textured and lengthy in that brightness of acidity. Anise, Good & Plenty and shocks of nutmeg provide intriguing notes of spiciness that complement the tartness of preserved lemon and green apple.”…….23.99

FERRARI CARANO ALEXANDER VALLEY’15 – “Offers tangy citrus, green apple, pear and honeydew flavors that are elegant and refined.”……… 45.99

Expressive aromas of citrus zest and lime-blossom are highlighted by honeysuckle and wet flint. The palate is heightened by a compelling, site-specific minerality, textural salinity, and precise acidity that carry brilliantly through the finish. A true expression of both the grape and its proximity to the Pacific Ocean.”……39.99

FORT ROSS SONOMA’11  –  “Fort Ross Winery is nestled on a sunny coastal ridge, overlooking the Pacific Ocean a mile below.  Their “True Sonoma Coast” vineyard is one of the closest, if not the closest, to the ocean in all of California.  This is a great Chardonnay if you are looking for a style somwhere between the over-oaked and the steely style.  It’s all about the gorgeous fruit in this one, Highly recommended.”……..49.99

GRAFTER CALIFORNIA’15 – “Ripe, concentrated fruit flavors of lemon curd, apple and pear are showcased on the palate, with a hint of baking spices. Partial barrel-fermentation and sur-lie ageing provide a creamy texture, while the balance of fruit produced in stainless steel helps to provide focus and vibrancy. The final result is a wine that will please both those that appreciate richer Chardonnays and those that look for pure fruit expression.”…….26.99

GUGLIELMO WINERY CENTRAL COAST “TRE”14………………..25.99

HAHN MONTEREY “NICKY HAHN”’14 ……23.99

HAYES RANCH CENTRAL COAST  “BEST FOOT FORWARD”’13………26.99

HAYES RANCH CALIFORNIA’16 – “It is golden yellow in color with inviting aromas of ripe apple, vanilla and hints of butter. The mouth filling red apple flavors are subtle, yet well integrated with oak to create a very smooth wine that has a soft fruity finish.”…….23.99

LANDMARK CALIFORNIA “OVERLOOK”’12 This new Chardonnay from Landmark isn’t a Sonoma appelation wine like last year’s: It’s made from 83% Sonoma, 11% Monterey, and 6% Santa Barbara grapes.  The overall impact is pleasant, but uninspiring. Aggressively meaty on the nose, it lets some fig, peach, mango, and banana character through after a bit, but only after putting up a fight. As it warms, the wine exudes more of a melon character, reminding me a bit of prosciutto-wrapped cantaloupe slices.”………….41.99

LONGORIA SANTA RITA HILLS’03 – CELLAR AGED SELECTION – “Bold, rich and loaded with tropical fruit, fig, apricot and melon flavors.”…35.99

NEYERS CARNEROS’14 – “This is a luxuriously layered and complex white. It’s an expertly rendered combination of ripe, rich fruit—most notably spicy apple and pear—that’s completely uplifted by bright acidity and a refreshing mouthfeel. Still youthful, it’s both vibrant and nuanced.”……45.99

PACIFIC OASIS COLUMBIA’14  – Bright golden yellow color. Aromas of apricot, nectarine, honey, and orange frosting with a soft, dry light-to-medium body and a medium-length kiwi and pineapple finish. A light-bodied picnic Chardonnay.”……18.99

PALI WINE CO. STA. RITA HILLS “HUBER VINEYARD”’13 – Just enough white peach and pineapple ripeness on the nose plays to the hedonistic side of the grape, but gracious notes of chalk dust and mandarin orange pith keep it intellectual. The palate is lively and citrus-driven, showing green apple, Bosc pear, salted lemons and more peach.”…….59.99

PALMAZ NAPA’11……………..55.99

PELLET ESTATE SONOMA “SUNCHASE”’14  – This is another stunner from Pellet Estate, from a high-elevation vineyard influenced by fog and wind. A wet stone note and crisp, lemony acidity suggest freshness, neither detracting from the body or texture.”……62.99

PIETRA SANTA CIENEGA VALLEY’13……………………………..25.99

PLUMPJACK NAPARESERVE’18 – The cooler Carneros site imparts this wine with lemon zest, green apple, and Bosc pear on the nose, while the warmer St. Helena site lends apricot, melon, and tropical notes. The Carneros vineyard also gives this wine a beautiful, bright, lively acidity, which is balanced by the creamy, rich texture of the St. Helena fruit. The touch of oak adds subtle layers to the nose and palate with traces of toasted almonds, vanilla, caramel, and spice. By foregoing malolactic fermentation, we are retaining the bright, lively malic acid, which helps to accentuate the fruit on the palate, and gives this wine its balance, drive, and length.”…..69.99

PRIDE MOUNTAIN NAPA’15 – “Oaky and spicy, this wine traffics in lemon, lime and tart green apple, a medium-bodied effort of balanced richness and concentration that should do well at the table.”………………….63.99

ROBERT MONDAVI  CARNEROS / NAPA “RESERVE”09- “Clean, pure and graceful, with the accent on ripe apple, pear and melon. Subtle background notes of toasty oak and vanilla are woven throughout the wine.”………46.99

ROBERT YOUNG ESTATE ALEXANDER VALLEY’07 – “Rich and opulent, with layers of fig, melon and honeysuckle flavors that are full-bodied, silky-textured, long and persistent, unveiling the vineyard’s purity of flavor.39.99

ROMBAUER CARNEROS’18 – “Since the 1990s, big, oaky, buttery Chardonnays from California have enjoyed explosive popularity. More recently, the pendulum has begun to swing in the opposite direction, towards a clean, crisp style that rarely utilizes new oak. In Burgundy, the subregion of Chablis, while typically employing the use of older oak barrels, produces a similar bright and acid-driven style. Anyone who doesn’t like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy its lighter style.”……55.99

RUSACK SANTA BARBARA’11 – “Clean and refreshing, bringing notes of ripe pear, apple and citrus to the forefront. Ends with a pleasing earthiness.”….34.99

ST. SUPERY NAPA “OAK FREE”’18…….26.99

SHAFER NAPA “RED SHOULDER RANCH”’ 13– “The 2013 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch looks like one of their all-time greats, and to date they’ve all been very impressive wines. The crisp tangerine, honeyed citrus, pear and white peach notes are prominent in this beautifully fruited medium to full-bodied Chardonnay that shows additional orange marmalade notes in the mouth. It’s textured, crisp acid, from having not gone though malolactic, gives it focus and zest, and the overall impression is one of brilliant richness subtly touched by smoke, but letting the fruit dominate. Year in year out, this is one of the superstar wineries, not only in Napa Valley and all of California, but in the entire world.”……48.99

SHAFER NAPA “RED SHOULDER RANCH”’ 14 The Shafer Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay is the standard-bearer of this grape variety in the Napa Valley and perhaps in the state of California. STONESTREET ALEXANDER’0623.99

STONESTREET ALEXANDER “BEAR POINT”’11 – “Orange blossoms, nectarines, white flowers and honey all flesh out in the 2011 Chardonnay Bear Point. Another wine that manages to be both rich but not ponderous, the 2011 Bear Point blossoms in all directions as the fruit opens up in the glass. A creamy, highly expressive finish rounds things out in style. The Bear Point is made from the ‘Peter Michael’ Chardonnay clone, which is believed to have originated on this property!.”…………….20.99

TOR CARNEROS’18 – The 2018 Carneros Chardonnay from Tor is absolutely sublime. This barrel selection is sourced from three historic Chardonnay vineyards, The Beresini Vineyard, Hyde Vineyard and Durell vineyard, each adding their own special character. As far as the wine itself, this instantly opens to seductive aromatics of poached pear, lemon oil, pineapple, crème brûlée, honeysuckle and lovely mineral undertones that all soar from the glass. On the palate this is beautifully textured with a wonderful Meursault-like richness, while at the same time showing outstanding balance and focus through the sultry finish. This is a simply marvelous Chardonnay from Tor that is delicious now, but should also evolve nicely over the next few years.”………48.99

TRIONE SONOMA “RIVER ROAD RANCH”’16 – This delivers an upfront, savory impression with toasty, biscuity aromas across candied peaches. The palate has praline-coated pear and melon flavors with a smooth array of ripe, fleshy peaches. Holds long and fresh.”………44.99

WALTER HANSEL RUSSIAN RIVER “ALYCE” CUVEE’13   Named after Steve Hansel’s mother and my favorite of his Chardonnays, the 2013 Chardonnay Cuvée Alyce is made from the Hyde and Hudson selections of the Old Wente clone blended with Clone 95. It sees 40% new oak, and comes across as the richest, most intense of the Hansel Chardonnays.
